What is "Contributions Toward a Brighter Future 2.0"?
CTBF 2.0 is a grant-funded project held across Madison County. Its goal is to provide a platform for county residents to share narrative histories with students, who will create digital projects that provide a platform for the stories. At CMHS, Honors English 3 students are participating in this project.
CTBF 2.0 Project Overview

"Underserved student populations in Madison County, Illinois, identified intergenerational conflict as their most pressing concern at the Mannie Jackson Center for the Humanities Foundation 2017 Conversation Toward a Brighter Future summit. The IRIS Center for the Digital Humanities, in partnership with MJCHF and the Madison County Regional Office of Education, will develop a humanities curriculum for a new iteration of the program that addresses these concerns. In collaboration with area teachers they will create a course of study incorporating novels, music, art, and oral histories that explores adolescence, adulthood, and aging. Building on what they learn in the classroom, students will have the opportunity to participate in digital storytelling studios to construct personalized narratives that foster conversation within their communities about how to communicate better across generational divides."

What Will the Projects Look Like?
In this first phase of the project, students are learning how to tell object-based stories, creating digital galleries through the Smithsonian Learning Lab. This website allows students to showcase meaningful objects to the storyteller that collectively explore the cultural markers of age.

The purpose of the initiative is:
- To learn how the personal and cultural stories we tell inform our perspectives on aging
- To understand how these stories impact our ability to speak across generations
- To enact a conversation that fosters better communication across generations.
- To give residents of Madison County the opportunity to share their experiences about aging and stages of life.
- To teach students how to be conscientious story facilitators through digital mediums.
- Participate in a preliminary meeting and subsequent interview by sharing their ideas, stories, pictures, and/or artifacts with one of the project’s student facilitators.
- Work with student facilitator to craft and provide feedback on their digital story.
- Decide whether to share their digital story publicly, or keep it private.
